What do you do and where do you do it?
I am a customer service advisor at British Gas.
What did you do before?
I previously worked in retail. It was my role as a sales advisor that I discovered I want to work with the public.
Why a change of career?
When I realised I wanted to pursue a career that really helps people, I want to give back to society. So I decided to consider my options. I was actually recommended this route by my aunt, a British Gas customer service advisor of 17 years. After doing my research on British Gas, I applied for the 13-month apprenticeship scheme and was accepted!
Why did you choose an apprenticeship?
The apprenticeship allows me to put my new skills into practice at the customer contact centre – the opportunity to gain hands-on experience was one of the things that stood out and persuaded me this was the route for me.
Are you enjoying your apprenticeship?
I really enjoy working in a team, we all get along really well and share the same satisfaction in knowing that we’re making a difference to our customers’ day. I feel proud to be part of the team. On top of that, I’m still learning new skills every day as well as earning money at the same time.
No regrets?
I’m half-way through my programme now, definitely no regrets. Doing an apprenticeship is great! I’ve already met so many new people and have learned so much, from how to resolve customer enquiries effectively to phone communication skills.
What do you see yourself doing in the future?
I’d love to climb the career ladder at British Gas and work my way up to being a trainer one day, it would be great to share my knowledge with other people.
