What will you be doing?

As our technical expert on Steam, Through the implementation of Anglian Waters Management of Steam and safe systems of work, you will be responsible for overseeing the safe operation and maintenance of steam and low temperature hot water assets across Anglian Water. Ensuring full compliance with all Steam-related health and safety regulations, specifically PSSR, INDG436, PUWER and BG01.

You will be responsible for Identifying and ensuring delivery of all required planned maintenance on SRP assets, including annual Steam Raising plant inspections and periodic Non-destructive testing (NDT) assessments in line with PSSR requirements and as specified by our independent competent person and certifier.

You will provide technical support and advice, provide training and set standards and share best practices with our steam engineers, boiler operators, and operational teams across the region to ensure the safe operation and maintenance of all steam-raising plant assets. Alongside this you will provide training and coaching to upskill technicians. You will also carry out continuous performance monitoring and assessments of Steam and Bioresources Technicians to ensure compliance with the requirements for Boiler Operator and Boiler Attendant status.

Given your expertise, you will be a key contact for all incidents and accidents related to steam or low temperature hot water installations. Safety is the name of the game & you'll ensure all incidents are properly reported, investigated and that suitable preventative measures are implemented as well as ensuring that safe systems of work are followed by Steam operatives in Anglian Water through regular maintenance, inspection, testing & audit regimes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Policy Development & Compliance:
    Maintain and update steam safety management policies to align with health and safety legislation. Identify relevant regulations and develop standard operating procedures. Conduct technical risk assessments and periodic audits to ensure compliance with standards like BG01.

  • Technical Expertise & Support:
    Oversee the operation and maintenance of steam assets, ensuring timely planned maintenance and inspections. Effectively plan, communicate and complete reactive maintenance to ensure disruption to Bioresources operations and energy generation due to SRP asset non-availability is minimised. Advise on future steam installations and promote continuous improvement initiatives to enhance operational safety and efficiency.

  • Capital Project Management:
    Manage in-house capital maintenance and projects related to steam, overseeing budget management and compliance. Collaborate with project teams to develop specifications that meet operational and safety standards, ensuring a smooth transition to operations.

  • Incident Management:
    Serve as the primary contact for steam-related incidents, ensuring proper reporting and investigation. Collaborate with Trade Union representatives to apply a 'just' culture in investigations and ensure timely RIDDOR reporting.

  • Framework Management:
    Manage framework contractors, investigating significant incidents and conducting annual health and safety assessments. Perform audits of suppliers to identify best practices and recommend improvements.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • In-depth knowledge of steam-related health and safety regulations (PSSR, INDG436, PUWER, BG01).

  • Qualified and proven Steam and boiler operations experience with a background in engineering.

  • Strong leadership and communication skills for effective stakeholder engagement and team development.

  • Technical expertise in steam systems, maintenance practices, and safety management.

  • Experience in managing capital projects and budgets effectively.

  • Proven ability to conduct training and coaching to upskill technicians and ensure compliance with operational standards.
