Employment Type: Full Time

Location: Jersey, Channel Islands

Reporting To: Mark Le Vesconte

Description

We are seeking a highly capable Shift Operations Engineer to play a critical role in the real-time operation and management of the Island's electricity system. Acting as a key control authority within the Energy Division, you will be responsible for balancing electrical demand and generation, ensuring the safe, efficient, and reliable supply of power to both CIEG and the Island of Jersey.

Operating within a 24/7 shift environment as part of a multi-functional control team, you will make informed, safety-critical decisions that uphold company procedures, regulatory requirements, and the generation and importation strategy. Your work will directly support system resilience, operational integrity, and the delivery of secure energy to the community, while consistently reflecting the Company's vision and values.

When not rostered on the 24/7 shift pattern, you will transition to day-based duties, contributing your expertise across a broader operational scope. This includes managing the safe release of plant for maintenance in accordance with Energy Division Safety Rules, undertaking Distribution Control responsibilities, and performing Diesel Operator duties as required.

This role offers the opportunity to develop broad operational expertise within a high-performing team, contribute to critical infrastructure management, and play a visible part in maintaining the Island's energy security. We welcome applications from individuals of all backgrounds who bring strong technical capability, sound judgement, and a commitment to safety, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities

As a Shift Operations Engineer, you will play a central role in maintaining the safe, secure, and efficient operation of the Island's electricity system. Key responsibilities include:
  • Manage and control the CIEG and JE transmission and generation networks to balance supply and demand safely and effectively, in line with operational, regulatory, and energy trading agreements. Escalate deviations appropriately and support security of supply at all times.
  • Operate, synchronise, load, and monitor diesel and gas turbine generation plant and associated equipment. Ensure plant availability aligns with the generation plan and system demand, while maintaining high safety and environmental standards.
  • Undertake HV switching up to 33kV, perform duties as Senior Authorised Person and Control Person, and ensure all system isolations and operational activities are carried out in accordance with Energy Division Safety Rules.
  • Lead or support 33kV system restoration following outages, coordinate emergency response actions, and act as a key point of contact during critical incidents, including liaison with Emergency Services.
  • Provide first response to distribution network faults, support the Distribution Control Engineer where required, and manage out-of-hours emergency calls, ensuring timely communication with standby personnel and stakeholders.
  • Work collaboratively with operational colleagues in Jersey and with external partners including Guernsey Electricity, the Energy Recovery Facility, and French interconnector counterparts, ensuring effective coordination of importation and supply activities.
  • Ensure full compliance with Company policies, Health, Safety & Environment requirements, Energy Division Safety Rules, and contractual obligations, maintaining accurate operational, environmental, and personnel records.
  • Monitor site security and access at La Collette, manage service supplies to the Energy Recovery Facility (including treated water and fuel), and support operational liaison with ERF personnel.
  • Maintain broad operational capability across generation and distribution disciplines, contribute to the development of colleagues, and uphold the highest standards of professionalism, performance, and environmental stewardship.

Skills, Knowledge & Expertise

The right candidate will be a technically capable and safety-focused professional who brings strong operational awareness and a collaborative mindset. They will demonstrate:

Technical Skills and Knowledge
  • Sound mechanical knowledge of generation systems and/or electrical knowledge of generation and distribution networks.
  • A good understanding of Jersey Electricity Safety Rules and associated operational procedures, with the ability to apply them consistently in practice.

  • Competence in the use of operational and business IT systems.
  • A clear commitment to safety, environmental responsibility, and regulatory compliance.
