Job Description

About the role

Join us and deliver a cleaner, greener future through offshore hybrid projects.

National Grid Interconnectors is at the heart of UK’s transition to our net zero energy future. We operate several HVDC interconnectors that connect the UK’s energy system to some of our closest neighbours, allowing energy to be imported to and exported from the UK. As well as already owning a portfolio of HVDC Interconnectors, we’re working on developing new projects to ensure that we can meet the UK’s future demands for greener energy solutions.

As a Senior HVDC Development Engineer, you'll be responsible for the technical development of new interconnector projects and specifically the development of the HVDC converter stations. This is a fantastic opportunity supporting projects from early concept development through to procurement and delivery. In addition to working with internal stakeholders this role will involve close co-ordination with European partner organisations in the development of detailed project requirements.

This includes projects such as LionLink - a first-of-its-kind electricity link to connect offshore wind between the UK and the Netherlands, and Nautilus - a new multi-purpose interconnector combining offshore wind generation with interconnector capacity between the UK and Belgium. So if you're driven by solving the big questions of tomorrow - join us, and bring energy to life!

This role is based from Warwick and you can enjoy our hybrid working from office and home. You'll also have the opportunity to travel to European and UK project sites as required.

Key accountabilities
  • Develop detailed specifications which capture the technical converter station requirements for new interconnectors.
  • Develop end-to-end cable routes including onshore/offshore, landfalls and converter site locations.
  • Work with European project partners to develop integrated interconnector designs including for Multi-purpose Interconnectors.
  • Manage subcontractors as required to deliver elements of the work.
  • Support the planning and consenting process for new interconnectors and liaison with external bodies.
  • Support the delivery of the Grid Code Compliance process with NGESO for projects in delivery.
  • Produce reports, presentations as required to support key decision points and capture analysis, designs and lessons learned.
About you
  • Degree or equivalent in electrical engineering discipline, or relevant experience.
  • Knowledge of HVDC systems.
  • Knowledge of UK transmission system engineering.
  • Proficient project management skills including management of time, cost, safety and risk.
  • A detailed understanding of large-scale infrastructure project development, business readiness activities and/or operation.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of the UK and EU energy landscape.
  • A stakeholder-centric approach to delivering a high-quality output.
  • CDM, Health & Safety and Environmental legislation proficiency.

Don’t meet every single requirement? Studies have shown that women and people of colour are less likely to apply for jobs unless they meet every single qualification. At National Grid Interconnectors, we are committed to building a diverse, inclusive and authentic workplace for everyone. So, if you’re excited about this role but your experience or qualifications don’t match the job description exactly, we encourage you to apply anyway. You might just be the right person for our growing business in this role or another one.

What you'll get
  • A competitive salary of £49,000 to £65,000 - dependent on capability.
  • An annual performance bonus.
  • 26 days annual leave (plus bank holidays).
  • The option to buy additional or sell holiday days.
  • Generous contributory pension scheme - we will double-match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%.
  • Financial support to help cover the cost of professional membership subscriptions, course fees, books, exam fees and time off for study leave - so long as it's relevant to your role.
  • Access to flexible benefits such as a share incentive plan, salary sacrifice car and technology schemes, support via employee assistance lines and matched charity giving to name a few.
  • Family care benefits including a back-up care service for when your usual care arrangements fall through (six paid days each year as standard with the option to purchase further days).
  • Access to apps that support health, fitness and wellbeing.

We’re also building the energy systems of tomorrow – from bringing innovative technology to market that changes the way homes and businesses use energy, to competing for new, large-scale, climate-friendly energy projects.
