A great opportunity to use your knowledge of the sciences of materials across significant infrastructure investment programmes against ambitious environmental and asset performance targets. Our investment programme over the current 5-year AMP is approximately £2.5 billion and extends to water and wastewater asset maintenance and renewals.

Bring Engineering to Life

As a Materials Scientist you'll be responsible for working with various materials to improve their performance or selecting the best materials to help advance technologies or products to maximise asset performance. You will need to consider the environmental implications of choices and disposal of waste.

You'll need an understanding of the properties and behaviours of different substances, from raw materials to finished products. You could work with many different materials, from plastics and polymers to industrial minerals and construction materials.

In this role you will be analysing and evaluating data to understand the impact of the materials we use in relation to the environment. You will develop prototypes, support quality control within the construction and production process, along with advising on the adaptability of materials with regards to the implementation and beneficial approaches to drive efficiencies.

In enabling frontier performance you will challenge traditional materials and products, discover the latest innovations and collaborate with the supply chain and academia.

What does it take to be a Materials Scientist?

A degree in Materials/Chemical/Mechanical Engineering or related field

  • Accreditation by an associated professional body such as Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3)

  • Demonstrable experience of operating in the field of materials science/engineering

  • The ability to apply scientific reasoning to industrial situations

  • Selecting and using the best combination of materials for specific purposes in relation to future water and wastewater systems

  • Development of prototypes

  • Discovering the best materials to use for the right job/environment

  • Ensuring products comply with national and international legislation

  • Testing materials to assess their resistance to thermal fluctuations, corrosion/incrustation process and soil movement

  • Strong communication skills both written and oral with the ability to present to colleagues within and outside your discipline

  • Team player - promoting innovative thinking throughout the teams

  • An understanding of how your work relates to the broader commercial business

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

  • The ability to prioritise and plan effectively.
