Job Description

About the Team:

The ESO ‘Markets’ team delivers critical business activities to enable participation in real-time markets, meeting the needs of our current and future customers to deliver consumer value as the GB electricity system decarbonizes. Markets works strategically to anticipate and influence future change, particularly to deliver against the ambition of delivering net zero. We develop new products, systems and industry codes to ensure the ESO can operate the system securely, maintaining security of supply to deliver the best outcome for consumers.

Within Markets, the ‘Markets Development’ department is the strategic engine – creating the net zero vision for markets and designing the roadmap to get there. The department consists of four teams:

1. Market Strategy: looking at the long-term strategy for all GB electricity markets, including the wholesale market as well as policies for investment and capacity adequacy;

2. Electricity Markets Development: focusing on the roadmap for ESO balancing and ancillary service markets;

3. Cross Border Strategy: setting the strategy for how we trade across our interconnected markets;

4. Distributed Flexibility Strategy: unlocking the huge amount of flexibility connected to the distribution networks, including residential.

About the Role:

As Market Strategy Manager you will lead ESO’s Net Zero Market Reform (NZMR) programme, which is aiming to understand how GB electricity markets and policies should be reformed to achieve net zero most cost effectively. This programme started in January 2021 and has become one of the highest profile holistic market reviews in GB, as well as being a top strategic priority for ESO to becoming the Future System Operator (FSO). You will lead a high-performing team of 5 industry experts to deliver this complex programme.

You will be seen as an industry expert yourself, playing a leading role in senior stakeholder management and engagement for a range of stakeholders and customers, including HM Government, Ofgem and industry, co-creating market strategies with our customers and stakeholders. You will become a strong advocate for National Grid ESO’s market design proposals, and drive the debate for the evolution of markets across GB. The NZMR programme must influence the direction of BEIS’s Review of Electricity Market Arrangements (REMA), and you will work closely with senior stakeholders at BEIS and Ofgem to achieve this.

It is critical that the ESO is preparing for, and adapting to, the market reforms that the NZMR programme will recommend, so you will also lead on the implementation of this strategy from an ESO perspective. You will work across the entire ESO – engaging and influencing internal stakeholders across all levels, including regular workshops and presentations with the ESO Executive team. You will play an integral part in the Markets leadership team as the department establishes its position as a flexible and customer focused team in a rapidly changing market.

About You:

  • Significant interpersonal and communication skills focused on gaining external buy in and support for market changes. Expert in the areas of influencing, negotiating and building effective working relationships at a senior level in external organisations.

  • Strong interpersonal skills also in influencing and working effectively internally across an organisation.

  • Proven ability to lead a high-performing team.

  • Excellent stakeholder engagement capability, including articulation / exploration of complex insights in a compelling and credible way.

  • Strong understanding of electricity markets in GB.

  • Good knowledge of Electricity License, Codes and framework agreements including ESO regulation and price control framework.

  • Detailed understanding of economics of investment in GB electricity assets (generation, flexibility, DSR)
