The position is within the Operations Engineering team of UK Technical Services (GTS) and reports to the UK Head of Technical Services. The Lead Project Engineer shall lead a team of engineers responsible for providing expert technical support and advice to all Iberdrola Renewables Business Units (Offshore, UK, US, Iberia & International). The individual is also responsible for managing and resolving complex technical issues and providing technical recommendations affecting the global generation fleet. 


What you'll be doing 

  • Proactively lead and manage the mechanical area of Operations Engineering team in the UK (Structural and rotational) to undertake technical analysis, provide recommendations and engineering solutions for mechanical issues in order to optimise asset performance, generation output and production efficiency whilst minimising technical risk to the UK and global business. 

  • Report regularly to the UK Head of Technical Services and Iberdrola's Global Technical Services on the status of key projects and services being provided by the Project Engineers (mechanical) to the Global business (offshore and onshore) 

  • Lead and effectively manage the resource of mechanical engineers within the Operations Engineering team and coordinate multiple projects across numerous stakeholders. 

  • Support the UK Head of Technical Services in managing budget for engineering services to be provided by third parties on behalf of the team. 

  • Lead the coordination of technical investigations being undertaken by the team for wind turbine mechanical and structural component failures and the development of solutions. Advise business units of root causes, solutions and assess design modifications to optimise asset performance. Communicate to the business the key findings, risks and remedies. 

  • Manage the team to ensure engineering support for wind turbine Life Extension Projects to extend the life of the assets, while maintaining their structural integrity and safety. Advise business of required action and risk to extend asset life. 

  • Provide engineering support to the UK and global business in response to requests to resolve technical issues affecting production output and provide technical support during commercial negotiations with manufacturers.  

  • Perform technical assessments of potential equipment suppliers (including detailed technical due diligences of components) and apply lessons learned from the operational phase to mitigate exposure to risk for the Business. 

  • On behalf of ScottishPower Renewables, lead engagement with OEMs to manage technical risks and overall performance of generating assets. 


What you'll bring 

  • Degree qualification in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent engineering degree 

  • Minimum 5 years' experience of Renewables industry 

  • Minimum 5 years' experience as wind turbine engineering expert providing technical expertise on extensive mechanical engineering issues 

  • Good knowledge of industry standards and regulations 

  • Experience in leading engineering projects and managing engineers 

  • Experience in technical evaluation of mechanical machinery and equipment 

  • Ability to investigate assess and resolve technical problems such as structural failures mechanical resonances, etc. 

  • Ability to provide technical input to produce, maintain & utilise company standards for commercial purchase 

  • Ability to identify and source external resources and skills to appropriate project delivery requirements. 

  • Management of engineering consultants contracted to provide technical service to the Operations Engineering team 

  • Strong communication, management and interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate with people at all levels of the organisation and to deal with third parties, project teams and consultants. 

  • Awareness of safe systems of work, permit requirements for site activities and wind turbine safety rules. 

  • Health & Safety management skills NEBOSH certificate or equivalent health and safety qualification
