Future Grid Technical Specialist - Hydrogen

To achieve our commitment to reaching net zero by 2050, we need to consider how we can deliver low carbon energy reliably and safely to all consumers.

One route we are exploring is through our FutureGrid programme. FutureGrid aims to demonstrate how we can re-purpose our existing National gas transmission system to enable it to transport hydrogen. We will do this by building an offline hydrogen test facility at DNV-GL’s research facility at Spadeadam in Cumbria.

We have an excellent opportunity for a Technical Specialist (Hydrogen) to join National Grid Gas to work on the FutureGrid Programme. 

As the FutureGrid Hydrogen Technical Specialist, you will provide leadership to the FutureGrid team regarding the assessment of gas transmission systems and providing prior experience of hydrogen interactions with gas transmission network systems. The consortium team includes a wide variety of companies with a wide range of capabilities that will need to be managed through the Test and Assessment activities. 

In this role, you will work closely with our internal teams to ensure the resulting facility fulfils our requirements and provides a base for all future HyNTS activity.

We’re looking for someone who has knowledge/experience in:

• Gas transmission and its assets;
• Operational or technical asset management in gas transmission or petrochemical environments;
• Relevant codes and practices and determination of appropriate solutions for engineering or asset issues;
• National Grid gas safety management systems including incident control and management;
• Budget control and management.

You will need to be able to demonstrate:

• An appreciation of commercial and industry drivers within the gas market;
• The ability to deliver projects efficiently and effectively, in a timely and safe manner, leading and managing cross-functional teams;
• An understanding of who the customers are, proactively engaging with them to understand their specific needs;
• An awareness of who your key stakeholders are, liaising with them to ensure optimal facility delivery;
• Confident communication skills with the ability to articulate complex information to a wide range of audiences. 

It is essential that you hold a full UK driving licence and educated to a minimum of degree level (or equivalent) in an engineering discipline. 

It is preferred that you hold a membership to or are working towards membership of a relevant professional body e.g. IGEM/IMechE. 

Prior experience in Hydrogen is essential and prior experience in Methane Gas Network Projects is desirable. 

A competitive salary between £48,300-£61,300 dependent on capability.

As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus based on personal and company performance and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%. Opportunity Type: 2-year fixed term contract

Location: Spadeadam, Cumbria – however, the successful candidate can be based elsewhere on the basis that they are willing to travel regularly to Spadeadam, Cumbria, including overnight stays (up to 3-4 days a week).
