Job Description

We are seeking an Environmental Incident Advisor to join our busy team on a fixed-term contract for a period of up to 12 months. The team’s goal is to minimise the impact of Thames Water’s operations on the environment.

  • Competitive salary up to £35,000 per annum depending on skills and experience.
  • Flexible working arrangements 2 days in the office and 3 days at home.
  • Base Location: Hybrid Flexible, depending on your location you can be based at any of the following locations - Reading, Slough, Swindon or London.
  • Working hours: Monday-Friday 36 hours per week.
  • This role directly contributes to a key area of Thames Water’s turnaround plan, where you will have the ability to influence and improve our environmental performance.
The purpose of the role is to thoroughly investigate and report on pollution incidents, carry out robust root cause analysis to understand the underlying issues and use this insight to drive event learning throughout the business. This includes critical analysis and scrutiny of environmental and operational data. These improvement recommendations will involve influencing internal stakeholders and driving procedural change to improve operational performance and reduce environmental harm.  

A key activity is to engage and collaborate with our regulator, the Environment Agency through effective and influential communication. This includes proactively sharing information with the EA through Incident Summary Reports to ensure incidents are accurately categorised, which is a new process for 2024. Another activity is to write challenge documents if incidents are incorrectly categorised. These reports should be submitted promptly and include accurate, technical information written using language suitable for a regulatory body to enable the challenge to be successful. 

What you’ll be doing as the Environmental Incident Advisor
  • Investigate pollution incidents and prepare summary reports and challenges for the Environment Agency promptly.
  • Interpret and analyse scientific reports and data regarding environmental impact and operational performance.
  • Conduct root cause analysis to identify event learning, and feed this back to relevant colleagues through routine meetings or dedicated training sessions.
  • Respond to requests for information/data from internal and external stakeholders.
  • Coach and support team members to improve general team performance.
  • Contribute to discussions regarding pollution reduction initiatives.

What you should bring to the role
  • Strong communication skills, both written (including report writing) and verbal.
  • Awareness and understanding of key Environmental Legislation or Regulations. (for example CICS, 16_02)
  • Understanding of waste network and waste treatment operations is desirable.
  • Ability to work to deadlines is essential.
  • Previous experience in an applicable sector and/or working with regulatory bodies would be advantageous.
  • A good working knowledge of Microsoft Office is essential.
  • Be curious and use initiative.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
  • Be passionate about the environment and keen to make a difference.
  • A full UK driving licence.
