Salary starting from £54,800 per annum plus up to 15% annual bonus and healthcare

With plans to see SP Energy Networks (SPEN), part of the ScottishPower Group, look to invest over £5bn in transmission projects across our transmission network in central and southern Scotland by 2030, the Transmission Commercial team will play a key role in supporting SPEN to work at pace to deliver the transmission network that is required to support ambitions Scottish and UK Government 2030 targets.

Reporting to the Over Head Line (OHL) Engineering Section Head, you will be responsible for leading a team of professional design engineers developing and delivering engineering solutions, from feasibility to detailed engineering designs, for all OHL projects (132kV, 275kV & 400kV).

This will include providing the necessary basic and detailed engineering specifications and designs for projects, innovation, effective technical support, advice, and input throughout the lifecycle of the project.

The postholder will have up to 5 direct reports.

What you'll be doing

  • Leading and managing a group of professional Design and Senior Design Engineers.
  • Provide advice on the development of pre-contract design and delivery of projects by leading/supporting the technical aspects of OHL systems.
  • Carry out assessments of engineering documentation, feasibility and compliance with client requirements and support the preparation of accurate budgets for new projects.
  • Provide advice on construction and outage programmes where required in relation to OHL engineering.
  • Responsible for overseeing and undertaking basic/detailed engineering specifications and designs for OHL systems.
  • Responsible for providing technical assessment of tender submissions and making recommendations.
  • Defining OHL system requirements for input to System Construction Authorisation (SCA), Project Technical Specifications and UK trading agreement documentation.
  • Ensure all designs and equipment are in accordance with current legislation, policies, and operational requirements.
  • Lead the technical tender assessment of OHL systems incl. ancillaries (including suppliers).
  • Provide technical support to the Project Development and Project Delivery teams on matters concerning the design, construction and operation of OHLs and associated equipment.
  • Lead training needs assessment for new products or similar and the development and delivery of technical, operational and safety packages for such products.
  • Support OHL Engineering Section Head in the development of standards or other regulatory matters related to OHL engineering.
  • Attend meetings and deputise for the Section Head as required.

What you'll bring

  • Preferably, Chartered Engineer status.
  • Proven people management and leadership skills.
  • Excellent influencing and stakeholder management skills.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to form effective working relationships with other individuals, departments, and businesses.
  • Knowledge of Transmission Operator Networks health and safety and technical requirements and compliance.
  • A broad understanding of Electrical Network Owners/Operators and the market these businesses operate in.
  • Proven experience / expert knowledge in OHL system design at 132kV to 400kV voltage levels.
  • Proven experience and knowledge of CDM Regulations and Designer Risk Assessment.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Engineering degree or HND/HNC with 5 years equivalent experience
  • Proven experience in OHL or civil structure design
  • Experience in delivering designs for high value and complex transmission OHL projects.
  • People Management
  • Proven abilities to:
    • Communicate and influence managers, senior managers, and key stakeholders.
    • Writing clear and concise reports and documents covering technical, environmental, and commercial subjects.
