Affinity Water are recruiting for an experienced Design Engineer to join our Design Team.

The role:

You'll ideally have experience of working with or designing clean water networks and an understanding of CDM regulations in design process. Initially you will provide support to Senior Design Engineers to deliver project to programme, within budget, to the correct quality standards.

The purpose of the Design team is to ensure we make the application and quotation process easy and simple for our customers. The role is responsible for flexing to the customers' requirements at application, efficiently producing required information to enable a site survey, producing an accurate and timely design and cost advice, and resolving any queries or problems with the payment process. The individual will be experienced in water networks and have proven customer experience.

What you'll be doing:

As Design Engineer, you will be responsible for the delivery of high-quality water mains designs and vetting of third-party designs within the Development Experience team.
You will ensure that risk is designed out where possible, and ensure that health, safety and environment, water quality, and interruptions to supply are at the forefront of all design considerations.
You will carry out the role of Designer under CDM and ensure that all information from a health and safety perspective is completed prior to handover. This will include identifying potential considerations and hazards through desktop/site surveys, and the preparation of any required CDM documentation e.g. Pre Construction Information, Design Risk Assessments, F10's.
Reporting to the Design Manager, you will work with our Contract Partner to ensure designs and costs are provided in line with Water UK Levels of Service timescales.
Upon customer payment being received, the Design Engineer will hand over the scheme to the relevant Liaison Engineer who will then manage the customer journey through to delivery of the required works.

The role will be office-based with a hybrid nature between Hatfield and home location.

Principal accountabilities:
Work with customers to ensure applications are accepted first time and progressed in a timely manner. If required, will assist the customer to ensure correct application is submitted with all relevant supporting documentation. Design Engineer will manage the customer journey up to and including point of payment and be responsible for resolving any customer queries regarding design, survey and cost.
Carry out the duties of the Designer role under CDM, ensuring the Design you produce for all types of schemes handled by Development Experience, is compliant to company design standards and all information required under this role, such as hazard identification and Pre-Construction information, is provided.
Compile information to ensure an accurate survey can be completed by our Contract Partner, including utility drawings and other pertinent site information. Reviewing Contractors price once
survey is returned and challenging where required, to ensure most cost effective design solution for our customers.
Communicate with all relevant stakeholders to ensure that the design is fit for construction.
As part of the design process complete any thrust restraint calculations, commissioning and contingency plans that may be required.
Ensure all tasks are completed in line with agreed Water UK service levels, supporting our D-MeX ambition. Where customer satisfaction at risk, take appropriate mitigating action.
You will produce accurate and detailed cost advice documentation for customers, including, where required, Water Adoption Agreement/New Appointment and Variation agreement. The Design Engineers will also be responsible for ensuring that the customer understands the information provided, is aware of their next steps and is happy with the service received. Where customer satisfaction is at risk, take appropriate mitigating action.
Where a customer has requested a conversion of delivery method at payment stage and wishes to appoint a self-lay provider, the Design Engineer will issue the necessary Water Adoption Agreements in line with the timescales specified in the Self-lay code of practice.
Liaise with 3rd Party Survey Providers to arrange geotechnical, environmental, borehole, surveys etc. as required and ensure all findings are considered throughout design, cost and construction.
Compile information for construction packs.
On a rotational basis, be a physical point of escalation for the Customer Care team in Hatfield. Providing on-hand technical support to customers.
Respond effectively and efficiently to customer contact; ensuring no customer must wait longer than 24 hours for a response.
Maintain corporate systems with all information pertaining to a scheme.
To proactively support the Continuous Improvement process, from identification, collaborating on problem solving to engaging with implementation as Business as Usual.
Ensure that the safety, health and wellbeing of self, colleagues, consumers, and customers is continuously improved and put at the forefront of everything we do.
To carry out any other duties which are within the employee's skills and abilities whenever reasonably instructed.

    What you'll need:

    • Experience in a similar Design / Engineering role with a strong technical background
    • Excellent computer literacy and IT skills, including proficiency in CAD
    • Proven experience of working in a Customer Experience environment
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
    • Understanding of New Connections Charging Arrangements, Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 and NRSWA
    • Full UK Driving Licence
    • Understanding of WIAPS and Water Quality
    • Water Hygiene Certification
    • CSCS Water Certification
    • Understanding of Codes for Adoption and of the Water Industry Act
    • IOSH / NEBOSH Trained
    • SMSTS Trained


    • Salary £35-40k (dependant on experience)
    • Annual leave 23 - 27 days, rising with length of service
    • Working Hours: 08:30am - 17:00pm (Monday - Thursday) 08:30am - 16:30pm (Friday)
