About the Role


As a Cost Analyst, your role will be to build and maintain a unit cost base library across the Gas Transmission (GT) assets base, providing cost intelligence across GT. 


You will identify, extract and validate cost data from different data sources (SAP, FACC, G35, Delivery Units and Activity Schedules) and apportion overhead costs to the assets delivered as part of projects. Identifying the equipment units (and UIDs) delivered in the project, you will perform cost allocation and analyse the differentiators and intervention types for the equipment units as appropriate.


Analysis will be required for cost divisions/cost breakdown, capturing discrepancies, and overheads, applying defined business validation rules. Your role will be to provide cost benefit analysis, outlier data analysis and predictive cost forecasts, query cost data and resolve queries to a satisfactory conclusion with relevant internal functions and business units. During analysis phase, you will capture lessons learnt and document data discrepancies. You will ensure cost standards are maintained and quality of cost data is mature for Regulatory assessment and document and update any blueworks business processes for cost.


Other key accountabilities include providing support/coaching/training to user groups, producing any daily/weekly/monthly KPI reports and supporting the business on any queries. You will establish a cost SharePoint site and maintain folders for capturing evidences against any changes for audit trail, provide technical support to fix any issues with the cost book and regularly check and ensure the data is of good quality within the cost book.


About You


We are looking for someone who...

Is highly numerate and analytical - with the ability to work with high volumes of data, adopt all best practices associated with storing, manipulating and handling data. Someone who can accurately, meticulously and methodically prepare numerical data. 

Has excellent interpersonal skills - enabling you to communicate complex issues in a clear and concise manner, develop strong working relationships quickly and effectively, and negotiate and influence across all levels of the organisation including external stakeholders. 

Is self-motivated - allowing you to work on own initiative in a flexible and dynamic way. 


Technical Skills:

  • Experience of project accounting in a construction, energy or utilities environment.
  • Awareness of period accounting and accounting practices. 
  • Experience of working with cost data, working to rules for cost allocation/apportionment, using cost estimation techniques, variance analysis of standard and actual costs. 
  • Experience of undertaking cost data analysis, querying data to reach satisfactory conclusions with relevant internal functions and operational business units, variance analysis of standard and actual costs. 
  • Appreciation of typical operational activities performed in the execution of asset health, cyber and network modification works.
  • Awareness of how estimates are formed from first principles.
  • Awareness of major cost differentiators. 
  • Experience of working on core cost systems (SAP) plus high level competence in using MS Excel.
  • Knowledge of Regulatory processes. 


The ideal candidate will have a HNC/HND level qualification (or equivalent) in an Engineering, Project Controls or Finance related discipline and/or relevant experience.
